How Our Steel Fabrication Process Works
How a job moves through our shop
- Drawing and spec review. We start with your drawings, the governing specification (AASHTO, state DOT, ASTM grade or your own standard), quantities and the date you need the steel. If a detail will be hard to fabricate or inspect, we raise it before anything is cut.
- Cutting. Plate and shapes are cut on our CNC plasma and oxy-fuel tables, which keeps profiles and hole patterns consistent from the first piece to the last.
- Fit-up and welding. Our AWS-certified welders use the SMAW, FCAW or GMAW process the joint calls for, and our Certified Welding Inspectors check the work in the shop.
- Machining where needed. Bearing faces, mounting plates and connection holes that need a tight fit go to our machine shop under the same roof, so the part does not travel to a second vendor.
- Coating and final check. Finished pieces get the coating your spec requires, such as hot-dip galvanizing or a paint system, and a dimensional check before they ship.

Send a current set of drawings, the spec or DOT item number, quantities, coating requirements and your on-site date. If all you have is a sketch or a worn part, send that. We can work from it and confirm the details with you.
What does a steel fabricator do?
A steel fabricator turns plate, bar and structural shapes into finished parts by cutting, welding, machining and coating them to a drawing. For us that means items like bridge bearings, scuppers, guard rails, drainage grates and embedded items for precast and prestressed concrete.
How is steel fabrication priced?
We price each job from the drawings rather than a posted hourly rate, because material, weld volume, machining, coating and inspection requirements drive the cost more than shop hours alone. Complete drawings and a firm spec get you the most accurate quote.
What documentation comes with the steel?
Spec work ships with the records the spec asks for. On bridge bearings, for example, that includes certified material test reports, dimensional inspection records and coating thickness measurements.

Our Hattiesburg shop is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and you can call us at (601) 582-4427 during those hours.
